Journals

Journal writing in First Grade is meant to create independent writers.  The students are expected to write at least two sentences at the beginning of the year and increase the length as the year progresses.  Students work on handwriting and sentence structure (capital letters, punctuation, and complete sentences) during this time.  Independent writing means the students are spelling phonetically, but they should begin to incorporate correct spelling of both spelling and word wall words as the year progresses.
