Module 1- Building Number Patterns and Meaning (September and October)

The students will be:
  • working with number patterns and counting.  This will include skip counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's.
  • recognizing the amount in a patterned set without counting them.
  • ordering and comparing numbers.
  • compose and decompose numbers to 10.
  • solving word problems.
  • applying strategies to add and subtract.
  • using addition and subtraction within 20.
  • relating counting to addition and subtraction.


Assessments for 1st Quarter:
  1. Solves problems using addition and subtraction
  2. Applies properties to solve addition and subtraction problems
  3. Add and subtract within 20
  4. Work with addition and subtraction sentences
Essential Questions
  1. What does counting help you understand about numbers?
  2. What are strategies that help you count quickly?
  3. When you look at two numbers, how can you tell which number is bigger / smaller?
  4. What patterns do you see when you list the addition pairs for ten?
  5. How can number patterns and / or thinking strategies help you learn addition facts?
  6. How do operations affect numbers?
  7. How can different strategies be helpful when solving a problem?
Home Activities
  • Practice counting items to 120.
  • Skip count by 2"s, 5's, and 10's. (Counting is an easy activity to do while riding in the car.)
  • Practice adding using two dice.
  • Using a deck of cards - play "War" using the greatest or smallest number to win.  
  • Play "War" with cards but this time the first to add the two cards gets the pair.
